Baroque Keyboard Pieces is a graded anthology, in five books, of the keyboard music of the period 1600-1750. It offers, taken as a whole, a fairly representative selection of the forms, styles and composers of that period, and aims to show how the music can be played stylishly, whether on the piano or on old instruments. A further aim has been to include pieces that are tuneful and memorable in the hope that the task of learning them will be enjoyable as well as interactive. For the same reason each book contains well-known as well as unfamiliar pieces. On the other hand, minor composers are sometimes more liberally represented than the great names in order to spread the knowledge of much fine and under-played music. The order of contents within eh book is very loosely chronological: the selected pieces are arranged in groups according to source, date and nationality. An editorial note at the end of each piece gives a brief account of the source and text, remarks on the composer and the form or type represented at its first appearance in the volume concerned, and assistance in specific matters of interpretation.
